Injured

Oh the stupidity. After Saturday's WOD I had some time to kill, so I practised a few skills. Russ helped me out on some butterfly pullups: I still feel, and look, ridiculous when I try these. I also tried a few HSPUs on the parallettes with my legs resting against one of the uneven bars.

On one rep I was resting at the bottom, on my head, and in a moment of distraction, I feel over on my back. It wasn't an all out slap-my-back-to-the-ground fall, but it also wasn't a nice graceful roll either. At the time I felt nothing but embarrassment.

Later that day, I noticed distinct pain and tightness in the upper portion of my back, just below the neck, all centered around the spine, but fairly deep. Touching my chin to my chest and looking straight up in the air was difficult.

So, based on a quick assessment by Roger and Russ yesterday, it sounds like I hyper extended my neck when I fell and overstretched some muscles and/or ligaments in that area. I was not icing the injury, but after completing yesterday's WOD (the 12 days of Xmas, and BTW, I got crushed by Gabe) Russ handed me an ice pack and started me on a 15 minute on/off icing schedule.

It feels better today than yesterday, and I am still icing it as my schedule allows ... but I will be backing off my workouts for the next few days I think.

Re: Injured

That's similar to when I was messing around with Nick and Ryan between classes a couple months ago doing front tucks over the high bar and flopped back on a mat, missing my head and inducing whip lash. Sore neck for a week or so. Just take care to not irritate it and it will recover well. Sounds like you just strained the trap right above the shoulder blades.

BTW you didn't get crushed by Gabe. Sure you got beat, but not crushed. And who doesn't get beat by Gabe?

Re: Injured

I had to run some errands today so no time for class at the gym. I had to take two cars to the shop to get tires switched out. One car is getting snow tires and the other had a massive flat due to someone (who shall remain nameless) driving the car headlong into a curb and inducing a pinch flat.

So anyway, I had to drive Car A about 1.5 miles to the shop, then ran back home, did a quick deadlift set of 5-5-3-3-1-1-1-1, drove Car B to the shop, picked up Car A, drove it home, ran back to the shop and finally picked up Car B and drove home.

Phew. So after almost 5k of running and a 3 rep deadlift PR, I feel pretty good, although the weakness/stiffness/pain in my neck is still annoying.

I am guessing that I won't know if I overdid it until tomorrow.

Re: Injured

The deads are what would give you the most trouble depending on exactly what is strained, but you would have felt it during the lift most likely. Sounds like a fun mixed mode WOD.

Re: Injured

Yeah, it was lowered :-P

If I could do a front tuck over a HB at regulation I'd be pretty stoked. I'd also be able to pull a punch double pike.
